LANDIS SWEEPS SUPERPRO AT PLYMOUTH - COOK IS 2008 CHAMP

Postby Bill Lackey on Mon Sep 22, 2008 12:24 pm

Veteran Jack Landis scored two wins in the SUPERPRO Series at Plymouth Speedway while Tommy Cook duplicated last season by winning the 2008 championship.

Saturday’s Randercar Racing Enterprises 50 saw Rick Everidge and Kevin Todd bring the field to the green with Todd jumping into the early lead. Rob Buckley started his way to the front by moving into second on lap 3 and putting the pressure on Todd. Buckley’s terrible 2008 continued as he hit the wall on lap 14 and ending his night and season.

Fast qualifier Landis started eleventh and was third by lap 18. He moved around Everidge for second on lap 20 and for the next eight laps Todd and Landis raced side by side for the lead. At the half way mark, it was Todd, Landis, Doug Hayes, Steven Brooks and Tom Smith.

Landis finally moved around Todd for the lead on lap 29 but Todd continued to pressure the leader. Smith moved to fourth on lap 40 and to third on lap 44. At the checker, it was Landis by .73 of a second over Todd with Smith, who owns the speedway the race was held on, finishing a close third. Hayes, Derek Bischak, Brooks, Tommy Cook, Al Cook, Jr., Matt Hall and Everidge rounded out the top ten.

Landis was the Aluminum Racing Products - Corrigan Oil fast qualifier with a time of 13.368 seconds for an average speed of 100.987 miles per hour. Buckley was the ARP Hard Luck Award winner and Landis grabbed the AllStar Performance - Lane Automotive Hard Charger award. Bischak was the winner of the Penske Racing Shocks “Shocking Move of the Race”.

Sunday saw Mike Kugler and Jason Dietsch on the front row of the AllStar Performance - Lane Automotive 100. Dietsch jumped into the lead at the green with Tom Smith in second. Smith pressured Dietsch for many laps and finally moved into the lead on lap 21 with Landis slipping into second the next lap.

Point leader Tommy Cook brought out a caution on lap 23 with a flat time that put him at the rear of the field on the restart. Smith and Landis put on a classic side by side battle for the next thirty laps with Landis finally getting by and into the lead on lap 56. Smith was being pressured by Derek Bischak until lap 84 when a leaking rear end from another car caused Bischak to hit the wall and ending his chances at victory.

Landis cruised the final 16 laps to sweep the weekend SUPERPRO features. Smith was second followed by Dietsch, Matt Hall with his best SUPERPRO finish to date, Tommy Cook, Kugler, Al Cook, Jr., Steven Brooks, Rick Everidge and Doug Hayes.

Tommy Cook’s fifth place finish clinched his second consecutive SUPERPRO Championship over brother Al, Everidge, and rookies Hall and Zion Schaub. Tommy Cook became the first repeat champion of the six year old series. Hall edged Schaub for the 2008 Five Star Racing Bodies Rookie of the Year award.

Tommy Cook was the Corrigan Oil - Aluminum Racing Products Fast Qualifier with a time of 13.466 seconds around the 3/8 ths. Mile pave oval at a average speed of 100.260 miles per hour. Bischak was the ARP Hard Luck recipient and Hall was the winner of the Penske Racing Shocks “Shocking Move of the Race.”
